AI Overviews
How to appear in AI Overviews
There is no submission form and no setting. An AI Overview is assembled from pages Google can already find and quote, so appearing in one is a consequence of being quotable — and of being visible in ordinary search in the first place.
The short answer
You cannot opt in. Google selects sources for an AI Overview automatically from its index. What you can do is make your page an easy thing to quote: answer the question directly and early, keep the answer self-contained, stay factually current, and be technically available to the crawler. Everything else on this page is detail on those four.
What you can influence
- Answer in the first paragraphA passage that answers the question without the three paragraphs above it can be lifted whole. One that needs the run-up cannot.
- One question per pagePages that answer six questions get quoted for none of them. The page that wins is the one whose whole purpose is the question.
- Concrete, checkable statementsNumbers, definitions, steps, limits. Marketing adjectives are unquotable — there is nothing in them to cite.
- Stay crawlableContent in the HTML, not assembled by script after load; no blocking in robots.txt; a page that returns 200 quickly.
- Structure the pageHeadings that match how the question is asked, lists and tables where the answer is genuinely a list or a table.
- Be currentModels and retrieval both prefer sources that look maintained. An outdated page is quoted less, and when it is, it spreads the outdated version of your company.
What you cannot influence
- Whether an Overview appears at all for a given query. It varies by query, by market and over time.
- Which sources are chosen. Frequently the Overview cites a directory, a forum thread or a comparison article rather than the vendor's own site.
- The wording. The summary is generated, not extracted verbatim, and it can state things your page does not.
- Consistency. The same query can produce a different Overview tomorrow.
This is why “guaranteed placement in AI Overviews” is not a service anyone can honestly sell. What can be sold is the work that makes selection more likely, and the measurement that shows whether it worked.
How to tell whether anything changed
Watching a handful of queries by hand will not do it: the same query returns different Overviews on different days, so a single before-and-after screenshot proves nothing. What works is measuring a set of buyer questions repeatedly and tracking the rate at which you are named, with the interval that separates a real move from variance between runs.
That is what our check does — 16–18 questions, commercial ones asked 3 times, every raw answer kept. The formula is published and it is the same one the code runs.

- Does schema markup get me into AI Overviews?
- It helps a machine understand the page, and it is cheap to add — but it is not a lever that produces citations on its own. Pages get quoted for answering something clearly, and markup does not make an unclear answer clear.
- Do AI Overviews take away my traffic?
- For questions with a short factual answer, often yes — the reader gets what they came for. That is exactly why being named inside the answer matters more than ranking beneath it.
- Should I block Google's AI from my site?
- That is a business decision, not a technical one. Blocking removes you from the answer as well as from the summary, and for most companies being absent is worse than being quoted.
- Is this the same as ranking first?
- No. Sites are quoted from further down the results regularly, and the top result is often not cited. They correlate, but they are not the same thing.
